Favourites

What's your favourite book or author or genre?

At the moment Angels & Demons is one of my fav books, because of the twists in the plot that I didn't really forsee the first time I read it :P and the action ;) One of my other favs is 'The Swarm' by Frank Schatzing, a German author. That book is in the genre 'eco-thriller' Ofcourse a great deal of the book is not very likely and a bit weird, but it also contains quite an amount of (accurate) scientific info.

Before those books I was more into historical fiction/historical fantasy, not really the dragon stuff etc, but a good example of those books is the Troy series by late David Gemmell. The trilogy is about the happenings before and during the Trojan War, from different perspectives, with Helikaon (Aeneas) as main character, and without the interferance of the gods, which makes this story a bit more likely to have happened than the Trojan War as mentioned in the Illiad and Odyssey ;)

So atm, in general I'm into action thrillers, for example Deception Point (Dan Brown), Temple, 7 ancient wonders, 6 sacred stones (Matthew Reilly). Tho I have to say that I sometimes hate the genre, because there's just simply too much action or too many (main) characters X( :P

My favourite book is right now 1984 by George Orwell.... of course also because I've just read it and I was totally impressed.

Besides that I'm really into Ken Follett's books and also John Grisham is a great writer I think. One of my all time favourites is the whole trilogy of Lord of the Rings - the books are totally great. Of course I like the movies too, but sadly they didn't take some of my own favourite parts of the books in it.

Instead of Nike I like also fantasy stories with dragons and so in it. :D In fact I must say that I read every book which someone recommended to me (at least when I have the time to do!).

So my next book will be "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy... but maybe not, I don't want to carry this book to the other side of the world - just too heavy!

Which scenes from the Lord of the Rings books would you've liked to see in the movies? Was the Tom Bombadil part one of them? I myself did not care too much for that part (perhaps because I was rather young when I read it; 12/13), but a lot of people I know really liked that part.

I have read fantasy books with dragons etc that were nice, but they're not anymore on top of my list of favourite genres :P. Though at the moment I'm getting a bit fed up with the genre I've been reading last year, so time for a change again :"P

I haven't read too many chicklits yet, 3 in total, as far as I know. Bridget Jones 1 and 2 and The Dog Walker. If you haven't read the last one yet, it's quite recommendable (says a person who normally doesn't read chicklits :P). Well, at least it's a good read when you don;t want complicated plots an just have to relax from exams and other assignments :P

Which ones did you buy?

To this thread I simply have to add James Clovell... he's now one of my favourite authors too after I've read Shogun and Tai-Pan.

I haven't decided which book I'm reading next so please tell me if you have any new recommendations. :)

We have Shogun on the shelf, so perhaps I should take time to read it sometime ;) A recent read I could recommend is Pompeii by Robert Harris. This story is about the Pomeii and the cities in the proximity during the days around the eruption of the Vesuvius. It's a historical fiction novel that describes a bit how life (of mostly richer) citizens was around 79 AD, including some typical Roman conspiracies etc. It was quite intersting to read, because you got to know a bit more of Roman civilization and at the beginning of each chapter a quotation is made about the way in which volcanoes behave, so you'll learn something extra too :P

Pompeii by Robert Harris

I'll definitely have a look! You might start Shogun and if you like that kind of historical book, go for it.
