Surprising Scenes on the Street

There are days when you go outside, you are thinking about something, when suddenly something unexpected happens... I guess everyone has such an experience - whether it was a car crash, a celebrity or something different. So I'm wondering whether something extraordinary happened also to you... I'll share my story soon as well. :P

was on my way to a job interview in the Hague.. and suddenly our then minister of education Plasterk stepped into the train I was sitting in and sat down next to me. Didn't expect that to happen! :D But to describe it as 'shocking' would be too much credit ;)

I changed now the title... 'shocking' might be a bit too strong.. more like surprising and unexpected. ;-) At least that was what I wanted to write about.

  • For example, I saw the (in my eyes) worst Swiss politician walking around in my town a few years ago...
  • I was in France with a motorbike group and before we even could sit down at a coffee shop there was a car crash just about 20 metres in front of us (just car body damage - nothing serious).
  • Another story would be the one with a woman I've met in the north west of Switzerland and when we were talking about where I live she told me that she only knew one particular town in my area - and surprisingly it was my hometown with just about 450 inhabitants... quite a coincidence - her brother lives there (oh, and I knew him).

I saw something very shocking once. I had my car filled with kids because I teach piano and I was taking them home after a rehearsal for a recital. We were on a very busy street, and suddenly a well-dressed man ran in front of my car, and I had to slam on my breaks to prevent hitting him. Suddenly, I heard a loud "POP!" and the man fell down in front of my car. I saw another man running toward us with a gun in his hand, but he was dressed like someone who lived on the streets. All the kids started screaming, and I locked all the doors and shouted, "Get down on the floor!" Then, there was another "POP!" and a policeman shot the second man in the leg. He leaned across the hood of my car, dropped his gun, and held up a badge.

As it turned out, the second man was an undercover agent and the well-dressed man was the bad guy. The policeman had only seen the badly dressed man shoot the well-dressed man, so he had actually shot the undercover policeman in the leg. The bad guy had been sitting in a restaurant when he recognized the undercover agent. He ran outside and tried to high-jack a car, but the woman wouldn't give it to him, so he ran into the street in front of us. The undercover agent then shot him, and the policeman shot the undercover agent. We had to stay where we were until they figured it all out and called an ambulance for the injured policeman and the dead bad guy. I was the only adult in my car with a bunch of hysterical 5 to 9 year olds.

I hate guns. I hate how irresponsible those two policemen were to fire into a street filled with traffic. I hate that one of the children in my car could have been shot by a stray bullet. Thank God, it didn't happen.

Wow.. this sounds truly unbelievable. This sounds like out of a movie but not like reality. There just was an article in the newspaper about Texas students who are now allowed to carry guns at university... I hate guns as well, but I, fortunately, haven't had such a bad experiences in public.

I don't know what's wrong with the world anyway - here in Switzerland we had the chance to ban army weapons, i.e. that the soldiers don't take them home anymore, and about 56% were against it. I wasn't even shocked about this result... I already assumed that it'll turn out this way. I still can't think of a reason why Swiss men need a weapon at home, unless they define themselves through it which is just so pathetic. ;) (I know that this is quite a biased statement... haha)

Oh and some politicians wanted to ban knifes at night in cities, and surprisingly the same ones were against storing the weapons in the arsenals...
