Where I'm from (Texas) there aren't many smokers in public. They banned it from many universities already and it is strongly discouraged by the majority. Although I do know a quite a few people that do smoke, they only smoke when they are alone.

Well.. I study in the centre of Amsterdam, so I walk past blowing people and coffeeshops all the time. In the beginning I thought it stank way too much, eventually I got used to it, and after a week in Amsterdam now I don't even smell it anymore. So I'm curious if I smell it as strong next semester as I did when I started uni for the first time!

On May 1st a new law has became effective against passiv smoking in Switzerland. Now you're not allowed to smoke inside of restaurants, public places and working rooms. Bigger pubs are still allowed to have smoking lounges, though. There's no smoking now in shopping centres, schools and sports centre.

A bit longer also exist law that the people are not allowed to smoke in public transportations anymore, it became valid in 2005.

I enjoy the fresh air around me and I'm a strict non-smoker. I see definitely no reason for it and I don't like a cloud of smoke around me... furthermore, it's unintelligible for me to smoke - it even costs a lot nowadays and is it tasty? Gosh, I don't think so. ;)

Right now I am a bit of passiv smoker because my chauffeur smokes in the truck from time to time but he's paying attention to it and tries to avoid it when I'm sitting inside.

well, exposure to tobacco smoke is a risk factor of cardic disease already in adolescents. and that's why we need smoke-free environments. there is some evidence that artery damage caused by second-hand smoke in adults may be reversible. we do know that ppl who are taken out of high tobacco smoke environment have definite drops in developing coronary artery disease. there's been studies that show that in adults, that when they're taken away, it's a prevention. ;)

i was exposed to the second-hand smoke. my papa got used to smoking, a bad habit. he tried and failed to stop smoking for several times. but though kicking the habit is not an easy endeavor, there are a number of strategies available to help him quit. with my mum's support and assistance, he was gradual to smoke less for his health.( we all worry abt his body).
smoke-free environment is good not only to smokers' health , but also to the welfare of person at their side.

I totally agree with you wit. We have to admit though, that even though smoking is bad for the health you can't ban it. Therefore we should have lots of smoke-free environment to protect our children and in public places but on the other side we shouldn't go to far. Some likes to smoke a few each day and well, if they really want to - why not? As long as they take care of the others and don't smoke just beside the people.

There is also a law in France which forbids people to smoke in public places and in restaurants. However, the law is barely applied, there is always someone who smokes, even in the bus, or in the tramway (generally they are drunk people), no one do anything about it, and even if we do, it would end up in a fight, and we may be pursed for aggression.

In the restaurants it is still ok, there are signs everywhere, but in the street, in a bus station, tram station etc... there are still smokers.

It used to get me annoyed in the beginning, but I guess I got used to it. Anyway my girlfriend is herself is a smoker... but I get away from her as soon as she lights a cigarette :)

It reminds me of pets too, people are supposed to clean up after they relieve itselves, but they don't. So the streets in France are often dirty because of this.
