ID needed for users of cell phone

In china, mobil phone customers will have to present ID when purchsing a phone number, in the lateset campaign by the goverment to curb the global scourge of spam, pornographic messages and fraud on cellular phones.
I'm one of the subcribers who did not show ID when tregistering before the new regulations came into effct. But I'm glad to hear this news, for I 've been receiving a lot of spam and fraud, which really bothered me. I feel the policy hard to be implented . And it takes a long time to carry out by operators. However, it's a trend to do so. I'm encouraged to register again with ID.
in your country , do you need to prsent ID when purchasing a phone number? HOW do you think of this policy?

Here it depends on having a pre-paid card or a monthly 'contract'. If you buy a prepaid, that is completely anonimous, but if you want a phone with a montly contract, you have to show your ID, so they could track you if the money on you bank account is to low and they don't lose money because of that.
I think buying a phone card and be registerd has 2 sides. On the one hand it indeed could be good to track spammers and such, but on the other hand you lose again a little bit of privacy :P. Though... with all the extracted phone calls and intercepted text messages... what is private nowadays ;). Anyway, having to register when you buy a phone number, makes you think you have less privacy, while on the other hand you've never had any, but think you have ;)
