Shanghai Expo 2010

Quoted

World Expo 2010 is the occasion for China to bring the world at home, and for the world to feel at home in China. By dedicating a 5.28-square-kilometer area at the core of the city to exhibitions, events and forums on the Expo theme, "Better City, Better Life," Shanghai hopes to build a powerful and lasting pilot example of sustainable and harmonious urban living.

We (Swiss pavillon) actually wanted to show the newest technology about environment solutions and sustainability but it didn't meet the demands of the visitors... they wanted to see the typical things of Switzerland... cheese, cows and some chocolate. That's the main reason why some visitors were disappointed, wrote our newspaper. So for next time we know what we have to do - just create a souvenirshop there and everyone's happy - the people don't really want more, sadly. At least not too many of them. I was not really surprised about this... the average person is not ready to think more intensive about sustainability and our environment.

I'm waiting for wit's reply because she's been working there and she definitely knows something to add here... and perhaps whether our newspaper are right with this statement.
Everyone chases after happiness, not noticing that happiness is right at their heels. - Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)

Revelation of some truth abt shanghai expo

Thanx for silvio to offer me this topic. When it comes to shanghai expo, I have something to say. Until now shanghai expo is successful in the whole. But there are some problems too.
The most notorious issue is the stampede in opening ceremony of Korea pavilion on may 30th, when it opened and invited some famous Korean singers to perform.. when the news of selling tickets came out, some fans went there on may 29th, especially when they heard “ super junior”, a famous Korean singing group, would perform. It’s crowed with a sea of face . when it begun to ticket, some crazy fans were ready to rush ahead, nothing could stop them.. they even spit to the on-site volunteers who kept the order. Then the police came there to help keep the order, but it’s useless. They even spit at the policeman, who devote themselves to protect our country. One girl even claimed the police made indecent assault to her. The truth is that she lied. she took off her t-shirt by herself. What’s worse, they even beat the police and walked on the lawn to express their dissatisfaction after the tickets sold out. Some police thought of this, they even cried. It was in chaos and some police got hurt.
The reason for what happened is that first we found the workers in ticket office made a mistake about the number of tickets. Second but from these terrible behavior, we can see the violence and incivilization of our Chinese. Third after this issue happened, the shanghai government blocked all information about the stampede. And the Chinese media went along with the government. They disapproved this issue happened and claimed that it went along that day and nothing happened. But some vistors knew exactly what really happened there.one of my classmates went there and saw what happened. She who was one of SJ fans told me the truth.. fortunately, she was not so crazy and left early. There was a controversy between our college students online, called “69 jihad” on the forum. But after we discussed, our Chinese web screened our posts. They stated it was disharmony to the whole society. Sadly, I think we have rights to speak what we wanna say as we have rights to access to the goole, facebook, hi5,twitter ect. however, our humanity rights are deprived by the government. Totally , our government made great contributions to build and develop our country. According to our special condition, maybe it’s reasonable to do in this way. :S
As siviol said “ So for next time we know what we have to do - just create a souvenirshop there and everyone's happy - the people don't really want more, sadly. At least not too many of them.”, I’m afraid it’s not enough if swiss just creat a souvenirshop. Swiss should invite ur country’s famous star to perform in pavilion just as korea did to attract more visitors and then they would be happier. And maybe we need to change our theme of shanghai expo. How abt “ happier ppl, happier country” in place of “ better city , better life”.( just a joke) :P . As a developing country, we have a lot of problems unsolved. on the hand, most of our Chinese are superficial and ignorant, enjoying crowds and preferring matters rather than mind. But please remember most of us are friendly. on the other hand, our government pays more attention to the economic development. For many years, environment has been neglected by the current government. We have lacked the vision of future long-term solutions, preferring to take a look and see approach. Such a shortsighted stance fails to consider the needs of future generations. So I totally agree with ur contry’s theme. It’s better for us to see swiss bring the new concept and newest technology abt environment solutions and sustainability, which we lack and need. And our country are making efforts to change the situation and try to bring in or creat our own technology abt friendly environment and make it sustainable in a long time, which is difficult for us.
As to media between our country and other countries, I think they all hide something for some uncertain reasons, either blocking the bad news, or exaggerating the bad news and ignoring the good news. What we can do is to do some survey before we criticize. Ignorance and superstition prevent us from acquiring the truth . I believe genuine knowledge comes from practice.
That's my opinion. looking forward to ur reply. ;)
PS: i havent been to visit the shanghai expo , though i 'm studying in shanghai. i dunt like the crowds and waste much time waiting. maybe i will visit later. :D
