No! Turkey is not a part of Europe, it's near Iraq and therefore dangerous

No.. they have a different religion/culture (1)

No.. they will steal our jobs and their living standard is just too low

I was wondering if you guys have an opinion on the famous problem of Turkey wanting to join the EU. There have been some new developments lately and it turns out that most Turks and even the Turkish government don't see the point of joining any more. They're focussing on the Middle East instead nowadays. Turkey has been a candidate member state since 1986. Do you think it is fair to keep them waiting so long, and change the standards every year and add new demands?

Should Turkey join, and if so why? Or why shouldn't Turkey be a part of the EU? Because the main religion is the Islam, or that there are too many Arabic people. Do you think that the living standard is too low, or that Turkey simply isn't a part of Europe. (Which leads us to the question what Europe is... a geographical area, a culture, religion, living standards? There is no clear answer to this question). As some of you know, I study these subjects in depth. I was just wondering what you guys think of this subject without knowing all academic details. :)

P.s. 'Europe' and 'EU' are used as denoting the same. Although they officially denote different entities.
Just be yourself, there are enough 'others'!

If they fulfilled everything, I don't see any problems. They're a part of Europe and they have a right to join the EU. So, when they fulfilled all the demands, it's totally ok. I don't think they woul "steal" our jobs... that's just the famous fear. In Switzerland they're talking the whole time about foreigners stealing our jobs. But it never came so bad how they prognosticatet.

I totally agree with you Sara. As long as they fulfill all the terms to join the EU they should be accepted.

Compared with other EU countries Turkey doesn't have a lower standard, I'd assume. (Greece? Bulgaria?) In my eyes it only could be a problem that they have such different sights on the world and don't approve to the European (EU countries...) view.

We have to stop thinking that other countries are a threat anyway (okay, there are some exceptions (e.g. some dictatorships)...

Switzerland works pretty well even without being in the EU, by the way. Though I think in the end we must join... there's no way to have this special treatment forever. :D It makes just a lot things more complicated and we adjusted our law and many other things to the EU standards already. In a few decades it won't even be a big step anymore.
