Public Transportation

How important is public transportation in your life? Do you use it regularly? Do you possess an own vehicle to go from A to B or can you get the car from yuor parents? How would you rate your country's policy for transportation?

I need public transportation to arrive at university in time. This because my uni is 50km away from home and is situated in the center of Amsterdam. Which is absolutely impossible to reach by car, and very expensive! (Adding to that: I don't have my driving licence not a car.. so it's even harder to get there without public transportation, considering I refuse to cycle 100km a day). The government made a public transportation-card possible for students. So it cuts down on the costs for me :)

i ive in the dormitory, which is commom in shanghai, china or the whole country. it's not far from the college campus. so it's unnecessary for me to own a vehicle. when i wanna go out and go shopping, the buses and subways are my first choice. the shangahi government provides the residents and us students with transportation card ,convenient and cheaper.
i think this policy plays an important role in relieving the traffic congestion, encouraging ppl to take public transport. besides, without fewer private cars, it's good for improving the air condition and reducing respiratory diseases.
it's in accord with the theme of the 2010 shanghai world expo “ better city, better life”.

Public transportation is quite important as I dont have a driver's licence :P, so I either have to use my bike, or train/bus. I go by train most and prefer it over the bus. Depending on how often I have to get somewheher, I use public transport 1-6x a week, of which sometimes a multiple times a day.

We often complain about our trains and busses, but secretly we actually shouldn't complain, as the railway is quite good in comparison to some other countries.

I have my own car. The US does not have very good public transportation, therefor I have to drive from my house to the university monday-friday and it does get a little expensive, its like $8-$10 a day in just gas. There is large metropolitan areas that have them but I believe that they are not as common as in europe or asia. To be honest I personally don't know anyone that uses public transportation.

At the moment it's just my bike for me. Since my public transportation card isn't valid until the 16th of August. Or when I'm really lazy I just let my driving instructor drop me off at the place I need to be in the city after one of my lessons. Then I can take the bus back home for less money (how Dutch this sounds... or is it just student logic? :D)

I went by train and bus to school for about 4 years and that'd be 5 days a week. Iit's been really important in my life and soon it will again. In Switzerland quite a few young people need to get a general ticket (you pay for one year and can go wherever you want just by showing this card). At least most of the students in my area have to. ;) Apart from that also the workers who haven't got a car yet.

Right now I'm using my family's car or motorbike in order to get to work, simply because it's too early and there wouldn't be a suitable bus to bring me there.

In fact public transportations are widely used in Switzerland, I'd say.

Because I don't have a drivers license, I have to use public transportation quite a lot. I go with it to the University, and I need it also when I live in Zurich under the week.

I have a driver's license but it doesn't make sense to have your own car in a city so big like Helsinki so I use public transportation every day. Helsinki has the second best public transportation in Europe (according to a study) and I can definitely agree. (: You can take the bus, tram or metro and you'll get anywhere. And it's seriously cheap for students; for 30 days the fee is only 21,50€ and you have unlimited use.

Gosh, that's so cheap. I pay like 600€ for one year but that just because my brother and mother have also the general ticket. It's even cheaper when my mother has it too than only my brother and myself... that's so weird. ?( She don't really want to use it but that might be a reason for her. haha.

Our public transportations are not cheap therefore usually on time like nowhere else, I assume.

hmmm.. for me I would rate it as expensive. Considering I can use public transportation for free! :D But I can only do so IF I graduate within a certain time.

In Bordeaux it's better to use public transportation if you are in the centre. The company in charge made special fares for people, based on their age, and status. I do have my driver licence, but I don't own a car there, anyway we need a parking place, and it's difficult to have one there because there are still a lot of cars and not enough place to park.

Recently they set up bicycles like in Paris : there are several stations where you can take a bicycle, and use it for an hour or the entire day depending on the subscription we made. It becomes handy when we have short distances to make, but if the station we are going to is full, we have to turn back to another station to put back the bicycle :)

There aren't any subways there, but I think it's not that bad. I read an article about the polluted air in subways station and it is indeed worrying. The particles made by the subway car and wheels remain suspended in the air, because the air isn't renewed, and the pollution reaches its peak when there are a lot of people with the more frequented station. In the long term it can cause serious diseases as well as lung cancer and such.

However the advantage of the subway is its speed and the reduced waiting time compared to the bus, and nowadays everyone is always in a hurry. I am even amazed at myself for being so stressed out at the time, and I often get really upset when waiting for a bus to come for 15 minutes, when they are supposed to be there more often. It's the same when I often see 2 of the same bus line passing one after the other : the drivers don't respect their timetables at all.
