Travel plans

A new year has started, so time for new travel plans! Have you already thought of plans for coming holidays or you'll just see what time will bring for then?:P

As for me, no big plans yet, but I'll probably go a week to the Auvergne, France for a week, for one of my courses; Petrology (If everything is administratively ok, because I have some problems with registering xD)

That's a part of the Auvergne, so.. according to this view, it could get quite nice over there :P

Apart from that My parents and I were thinking of going to Sicily for a week, somewhere in Spring. We mentioned it years ago, but the plan never made it to reality, so hopefully it'll happen this year 8)

My plans don't go any further than that for the moment. But there will probably be some weeks of excavations somewhere. If I have some time left in summer, I'll see if it's possible to make an interrail trip or something like that ;)

Enjoy us with your plans for this year (or after :P)!

Besides New Zealand and Australia I would like to go somewhere by motorbike... but I am not sure where. I am thinking of Russia - or what about Spain? You see, kinda hard to make the right decision but there is still some time to go. My goal in the next couple of years is to go to Asia I think... should be a really interesting place - but I'm not going by my own there... so first I have to convince a friend... haha.

Well... It looks like I will go to Hamburg in spring (just for a few days, because a good friend of mine stays there). Then perhaps I'll go to Rome with my family, but I'm not sure yet. In October or September I'll finally go to Japan! I will be there for one year as an exchange student. I'm really looking forward and I'm so excited!

Wow, a year to Japan? That's cool! Did you have to be selected to go there (eg, are there more people who study Japanese than can go on an exchange program?). As far as I've heard from Japanology in Leiden, from the 100-150 students only 2 or so zould go to Japan for exchange. But very cool that you have the oppurtunity to go there!

Rome is nice too! Been there before?

@ Silvio: Traveling by motorbike seems a great way to travel, seeing much, and be able to travel long distances in a 'short' time, if needed. Have you seen the series on National Geographic: The Long way round and The long way down? Those series made me see the advantages of traveling a motorbike :P (tho I don't have a licence for both car or motorbike xD, but still... it seems cool ;))

Oh, there are more students!^^ We have some exchange programs here in zurich, so about 5 can go from the university itself, and about 10 to 12 from our institute. Yeah, I'm very happy, that I can go, because first it looked like I don't get a place, but now, it is for sure that I can go!^^

Sounds great Sara... sounds like an excitement experience for you then. So you'll stay with a homestay family? Only 5 from the university? Wow... quite hard to be chosen I suppose. :)

I know National Geographic but I haven't seen the article/photos yet. No idea whether I'll find it somewhere, but thanks... sounds intriguing!

heh, I will not stay at a family. They have many dormitories so I will stay there with other students, and because I know someone who's there now I suppose she will leave some things there for me, so I don't have to buy everything. And yeah, 5 from the university and about 12 from our institute (which belongs to the university, but only students of the japanology are able to go, but those 5 from university are for all students from every institute).

Have some news about your exchange in Japan?
A friend of mine is probably going on an exchange from January or February till somewhere in June next year. He'll be somewhere between Osaka and Kyoto. Another friend and I are planning to visit him for 1 or 2 weeks once he's there :P (if the money and time allow it ofcourse, esp. the first one as Japan has the name to be quite expensive, but we'll see :P)

I have no real plans for the summer yet, but I actually want to go away for 1-3 weeks on a last-minute or so. Not sure yet where to. That probably just depends on the price of the airfare :P

Yeah I just got my ticket for Japan! I'll fly in September and I'm going to stay at Osaka. I will come home in August next year. Hm... I hope I can manage everything, and I'm quite nervous.
Well, Japan can be expensive!:P When I was there for three weeks, we were lucky that we found restaurants and hotels which were not expensive. That what is expansive is the public transport. But as for food you can get really cheap things. You can get really good food at konbini (24hour shops) or on the street (like yakitori, takoyaki and so on). I got spaghetti in a konbini which were better then in an italian restaurant in japan! lol

Well as for me, I don't have any other plans (I was a few days in Rome now). Also because I have to work until I go to Japan, and I should save some money!:P

That's quite long, from september to august. Do you plan to drop by if possible on this site or so to keep us informed about what's happening there? :P
I heard about the expensive public transport. In the Netherlands (and probably also some other countries) you can buy a 1-2 week train ticket, of which the fare is about the price of only a retour ticket Tokyo-Osaka (or something like that), so with that pass you can travel much more than when you'd buy a ticket locally.

I got a sort of change in plans for my travels... Perhaps I'll skip the last-minute and book a interrail ticket and go to Venice, from there by ferry to Greece or Croatia and from there travel back again :P. Don't pay too much attention to my ideas, as they happen to change fast sometimes :P

hehe, yes of course I will still drop by here!^^ Well, if you're as tourist in Japan you can buy something like an Interrail Pass, with it you can take almost every public transport (except one of the shinkansen, but I forgot which one). But as someone who has a visa for one year, you can't buy such a Pass...

Oh venice is nice (well if you don't mind the spraying which says: Kill the tourists!:P we saw one when I was there...lol), and you it's really nice to travel by the ferry (and boat)! Personally I love it!^^

How comes that? This sounds pretty unfair then! Have you heard an explanation to this issue?

Oh yes, Venice is a great place to go. It's been quite a while ago when I was last there but I simply loved it. Though it was quite crowdy because I guess you have to live with this. I haven't seen the spraying "Kill the tourists!" - that sounds pretty aggressive. As long as the average person from Venice doesn't think like that, you'll be fine there. 8o

Interrail sounds like quite a funny way to travel and I assume you will meet a lot of people. Have you done it before? I just have a few friends who did it like one or two years ago.

Well, because it's only for tourists!^^ It's just normal I think. Because you don't have a tourist status when you get a visa for one or more years.

Gosh, right now I definitely have the travel bug... I'd love to go abroad right now. :) Give me 5 minutes and I'll pack my stuff... haha... you can provide a flight ticket and everything's set.

At least I've only 3 weeks to wait and then I'll check out France by motorbike (I haven't been there by motorbike yet...). I'll go there with my father and nearly 25 people with their motorbikes... we simply need good weather. I hope some of them can talk French... I didn't even have it in school. :)

Cheers. ;) You've found some lovely pictures... It would be great to see those places.

Yay, it looks like we'll go every day to the same place back and make different trips each day. I guess I'm by far the youngest there... but that doesn't really matter to me really.
