food safety

there are a lot of roadside snack bars in china. how abt ur country? do u often take the snack beside road ? what do u think of the problems abt food safety from this point? ;)

We have some, but not so many. More common are the 'snackbars' (tiny fastfood shops)
I rarely get food there. When I'm near my home I actually don't get something there, only when I'm away from home and there's nothing else to get :P

The food safety is not a too big issue in the Netherlands, though of course problems can always occur. I also never had problems in a foreig country with that.

Well.. we also have the nice tiny shops Nike talks about. Those have some issues, but it seems like they're keeping an eye on that now.

Food safety is one of that big issue that dominates the news in Switzerland right now. What's your take on E. coli outbreak (EHEC)? It demonstrates to me simply that we should look more closely on how food is produced/transported in general. We have the tendency to want everything as cheap as possible, not understanding that then the quality decreases. I've read that in Switzerland we spend 7% of our income on groceries - so that's definitely not that much and it wouldn't really bother to change that a little bit, I'd say. If we have the money to buy expensive cars, it would also be clever to spend a fair amount of money also for groceries.

I'd say food safety is a really serious issue not only in China, but all over the world. food is something directly concerned with our health. but we pay less attention to food than other material. recently, there are some food safety issues in China, doing much harm to chinese health, even someone were at the risk of some kind of diseases. due to lack of effective authorities, some businsinessmen try everything to make money at all cost, regardless of consumers' health. from babay formula, chemical addictives to bombing watermelon, i'm worried about what food is harmless for us. if there are more and more unsafe food, no matter which are cultivated carelessly or get affected in the process of transport, does it mean that we should live in a simpler life for our health ? ?(

@Silvio: the whole EHEC-hype is starting to become stranger and stranger... cucumbur, tomatoes, tauge.. right. I'd appreciate teh information much more if they'd just admit that they don't have a clue what the source is.

Have to agree. People are now more or less anxiously avoiding these vegetables, while it actually just takes a bit of common sense, as in; you can take precautions as washing/peeling/cooking it, not necessarily avoiding it. It till now only really centered in Northern Germany, mainly affecting people aged over 70 or so? (some exeptions though). It could as well be related to hygene in some (public) kitchens, rather than solely vegetable related. We'll see how it develops.
